Samsung GALAXY Note 3 built the world's first mobile envelope tracking chip

Have you ever heard of QFE1100, the first envelope tracking (Envelope Tracking) chip for 4G mobile terminals launched by Qualcomm Technology (QTI)? This is a big deal for the mobile industry. If you want, you can disassemble the brand new Samsung GALAXY Note 3 to view the QFE1100 chip. Well, you don't need to destroy your terminal, let me introduce you what QFE1100 is-you don't need to do anything, just read on.

So, what's so great about QFE1100? In simple terms, its significance is that Qualcomm Technologies has finally released one of the most popular RF technologies in the industry-envelope tracking. Envelope tracking has long been a promising but complex mobile radio frequency technology in the R & D laboratory, and finally "sees the sky" in Samsung GALAXY Note 3. Envelope tracking is also important for Qualcomm Technologies' upcoming RF front-end product, the innovative Qualcomm® RF360 ™ front end. Therefore, what this means for Qualcomm Technology is: (1) proving an important component of the RF360 front end, and (2) meeting the needs of the mobile RF industry in a timely manner, especially considering the industry is transitioning to 4G LTE.

So what's so special about 4G LTE? This is more, but the most important thing for envelope tracking is signal change and amplification. The special feature of LTE signal is that it is composed of hundreds of smaller signals, while 2G / 3G signals have only one waveform. Increasing the signal will bring about changes in the total output, because you can imagine that when the smaller signal peaks are aligned, a larger output signal will be produced. In addition, for LTE with a larger bandwidth, it is necessary to add thousands of small signals instead of hundreds to obtain larger amplitude LTE output signals.

But signal changes will affect amplification! The traditional power amplifier (PA) is a component of a mobile phone. Its function is to amplify signals so that they can reach the base station. It works at a fixed power supply voltage and has power efficiency only when the transmitted signal is at the peak. In order to adapt to signals with large changes, the fixed voltage is usually higher than the required voltage, and finally converted into heat loss in the PA and the consumption of battery life.

Imagine how your heart would feel if your heart was always beating at the highest heart rate (say, 200 beats per minute). You will consume physical energy even when you are resting, producing too much calories, because you only need the heart to beat at a heart rate of 72 beats / min! Just like the heart always adjusts the blood supply to track our physical activity level, the envelope tracking chip (QFE1100) tracks the envelope level of the PA output signal by adjusting the power supply of the PA.

Envelope tracking can produce a more reliable amplified signal, and the PA's power efficiency and heat dissipation performance are improved by 20% and 30%, respectively. This is directly related to the longer battery life, and at the same time makes the mobile terminal feel and look "cold", because of energy saving, the appearance of the mobile phone can also be made thinner. In addition, the technology's ability to effectively amplify higher-bandwidth LTE signals allows mobile phone manufacturers to design terminals that meet global LTE coverage at a lower cost, and to respond to multiple LTE frequency bands deployed globally with fewer broadband amplifiers.
