Robot giants are not missing the chance to showcase their latest innovations. From November 29th to December 2nd, the International Robot Exhibition 2017 (iREX2017) took place at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center in Japan. As one of the world’s four major robot exhibitions, iREX2017 attracted 612 companies from 14 countries and regions, setting a new record for participation. At the event, leading robot manufacturers unveiled cutting-edge products and demonstrated how industrial robots can assist with daily tasks. Experts from top companies were on hand to answer questions, while factory automation specialists sought practical solutions. The "cooperative discussion zones" of big firms were bustling with potential clients. The energetic atmosphere reflected the growing demand in the robotics market. Many manufacturers reported that orders were coming in faster than they could keep up with. The technologies displayed—such as human-robot collaboration, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and deep learning—offered a glimpse into the future of smart manufacturing. Human-robot collaboration has become a key selling point. Major players like ABB, Fanuc, Yaskawa Electric, KUKA, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Fujitsu, and Mitsubishi Electric showcased their latest models, many of which emphasized safe and intuitive interaction between humans and machines. ABB introduced the single-arm Yumi robot at the exhibition. This new version, expected to launch in 2018, is more powerful and flexible than its predecessors. An Shiming, president of ABB's robotics division, noted that customer applications have exceeded expectations, with Yumi being used for everything from solving Rubik’s cubes to preparing sushi. Yumi’s design allows it to be reprogrammed quickly, making it ideal for customized production. “With just a few changes in programming and different grippers, Yumi can adapt to various production lines,” said Zhang Xiaoxuan, a product manager at ABB. Fanuc highlighted its “no safety fence” approach, emphasizing how robots can work alongside humans safely. Meanwhile, Yaskawa’s collaborative robots demonstrated how they can reduce physical strain and improve workplace safety. Smart technology and IoT integration also dominated the show. Fanuc showcased robots equipped with 3D vision sensors and deep learning capabilities, enabling them to sort and handle complex parts autonomously. ABB’s “Painting Machine with IoT” included sensors that monitor performance and upload data for remote maintenance. Mitsubishi Electric presented lab-stage technologies like AI-driven 3D vision systems, allowing users to adjust robotic setups without specialized knowledge. These developments signal a shift toward more intelligent, connected, and adaptable robotic systems. Beyond the big names, startups like Mujin also made waves. With growing demand for automation, especially in China, companies are investing heavily in robotics. Fanuc reported a significant increase in Chinese orders, from 4,000 units per month last year to over 9,000 this year. As labor shortages and rising costs push industries toward automation, the robotics market is booming. Companies like Guangzhou Taiwei Machinery, a Fujitsu partner, see strong growth in automation demand across China. With continuous innovation and expanding applications, the future of robotics looks brighter than ever.
