Robot giants are seizing the opportunity to showcase their latest innovations at the International Robot Exhibition 2017 (iREX2017), which took place from November 29th to December 2nd at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center in Japan. Companies like ABB, Fanuc, Yaskawa Electric, KUKA, Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Fujitsu, and Mitsubishi Electric all had large booths showcasing their latest innovations. ABB introduced the new single-arm Yumi robot, designed for tasks that require higher precision and adaptability. This version, set for release in 2018, offers improved load capacity and dexterity compared to its predecessors. According to ABB’s president, An Shiming, customer feedback revealed that Yumi could perform a wide range of tasks beyond its original design, such as solving Rubik’s cubes or assembling gifts. The development of the single-arm model was driven by real-world user needs.
Fanuc emphasized the “no safety fence†concept in its collaborative robots, allowing seamless interaction between humans and machines. These robots can assist workers in various tasks while maintaining a safe working environment. Meanwhile, other companies focused on improving efficiency through smart systems and IoT integration.
ABB’s “Painting Machine with Internet of Things†featured embedded sensors and chips that monitor critical components in real-time, enabling remote monitoring and predictive maintenance. Similarly, FANUC’s “zero downtime†solutions leverage IoT to connect robots across factories, ensuring continuous operation and efficient data management.
Entrepreneurial startups like Mujin also made waves at the exhibition, demonstrating how small companies can compete with industry leaders. With strong market demand, even smaller firms are finding success, especially in China, where automation is rapidly expanding.
