BOE is set to begin mass production of 65-inch panels next year, with expectations of a significant increase in output in 2019. By 2020, the company aims to capture nearly 40% of the market for both 65-inch and 75-inch panels. This ambitious target comes as BOE continues to expand its manufacturing capabilities, with three new plants in mainland China expected to come online in 2018. These developments have generated considerable interest from industry analysts and investors alike.
According to Hu Jiaxuan, a research manager at WitsView, BOE’s first 10.5-generation line is already focused on producing 65-inch panels. Meanwhile, CLP Group’s two 8.6-generation plants are targeting 50-inch and 58-inch sizes, which are expected to boost shipments of larger TV panels. With these new capacities, BOE is well-positioned to take a dominant share of the high-end panel market.
In 2018, most of the new factories in mainland China were either launched or slightly expanded. WitsView estimates that total TV panel shipments will grow by approximately 5% this year. However, some companies are seeing much stronger growth. For instance, CLP Group is projected to grow by 58.6% due to the activation of its Xianyang and Chengdu 8.6-generation plants. Huike, on the other hand, is expected to see a staggering 118.2% growth, driven by improvements in yield at its 8.6-generation facility. BOE, meanwhile, is expanding its 8.5-generation lines alongside its 10.5-generation plant, resulting in a modest 4.7% annual growth.
According to WitsView, mainland Chinese panel manufacturers accounted for about 38.64% of global TV panel shipments in 2018, surpassing South Korea’s 32.28% and Taiwan’s top two manufacturers, which together held 25.54%. This shift highlights the growing influence of Chinese panel makers in the global market.
In addition to increasing shipment volumes, mainland manufacturers are also focusing on larger panel sizes. This trend has led to a noticeable change in the overall distribution of TV panel sizes. According to Hu Jiaxuan, oversized panels of 50 inches or larger are becoming increasingly popular due to their ease of production and higher profitability. Many of these panels are equipped with 4K technology, making them highly attractive to consumers.
WitsView reports that the share of 50-inch TV panels is expected to rise to 17% in 2018, while panels over 60 inches will account for 7.2% of the market. In contrast, the 40-45-inch segment saw a decline to 20.2% due to reduced production from Samsung. However, the 32-inch segment remains stable at 30.7%, supported by demand from emerging markets like Southeast Asia.
BOE's 10.5-generation line is specifically targeting 65-inch and 75-inch panels. Meanwhile, panel manufacturers in Taiwan and South Korea have already started deploying similar technologies. This year, 65-inch panel shipments are expected to reach 11 million units, while 75-inch shipments could hit 1.6 million. BOE is expected to significantly increase its market share in these categories, with projections of 21% in 2019 and 37% in 2020.
For 75-inch panels, South Korean manufacturers such as Samsung and LGD previously dominated the market, holding 73% of the share in 2017. However, with the economic benefits of 10.5-generation production, BOE is expected to capture 42% of the 75-inch market by 2020, far outpacing South Korea’s 27%. This shift underscores the rising competitiveness of Chinese panel manufacturers on the global stage.
