BOE 2018 mass production of 65-inch panels, can achieve nearly 40% market share in 2020

BOE is set to begin mass production of 65-inch panels in the coming year, with a strong expectation of increasing its market share in 2019. By 2020, it is projected that BOE will capture nearly 40% of the market for both 65-inch and 75-inch panels. This growth is supported by the expansion of new production facilities, including three new plants in mainland China, which have already drawn significant market attention. According to Hu Jiaxuan, a research manager at WitsView, the first product from BOE’s 10.5-generation line is specifically targeted at 65-inch panels. Meanwhile, CLP Group's two 8.6-generation plants are focused on producing 50-inch and 58-inch panels, which are expected to boost shipments of larger TV panels. These developments are anticipated to help BOE achieve a substantial market share in the large-screen segment by 2020. In 2018, only one new factory was launched in mainland China, while others were mainly expanded. Despite this, WitsView estimates that total TV panel shipments will grow by around 5% that year. However, certain companies saw much higher growth rates. For example, CLP Group’s shipments increased by 58.6% due to the opening of its Xianyang and Chengdu 8.6-generation plants. Huike, on the other hand, saw a massive 118.2% increase thanks to plant expansions and improved yield rates. BOE also expanded its 8.5-generation plants, resulting in a 4.7% annual growth rate. According to WitsView, mainland Chinese panel manufacturers captured about 38.64% of the TV panel market in 2018, surpassing South Korea’s 32.28% and Taiwan’s major players at 25.54%. This shift highlights the growing influence of mainland manufacturers in the global display industry. Alongside the increase in shipments, new production capacity has also started focusing on larger TV panels, leading to changes in the overall size distribution of TV panels. Hu Jiaxuan noted that oversized panels of 50 inches or more are favored due to their high turnover and profitability, as they often come equipped with 4K technology. In 2018, the share of 50-inch panels is expected to rise to 17%, while panels over 60 inches will reach 7.2%. On the other hand, 40-45-inch panels dropped to 20.2% due to reduced production from Samsung, while 32-inch panels remained stable at 30.7%, supported by demand in emerging markets like Southeast Asia. BOE’s 10.5-generation line is focused on 65-inch and 75-inch panels, and the company is expected to significantly increase its presence in these sizes. Taiwanese and Korean manufacturers have already begun deploying similar products, with 65-inch shipments reaching 11 million units and 75-inch shipments hitting 1.6 million units in 2018. By 2020, BOE is expected to capture up to 42% of the 75-inch market, far outpacing South Korea’s 27%. With continued investment and expansion, BOE is well-positioned to solidify its leadership in the large-size TV panel market in the years ahead.
