Infineon unveiled the 2015 application power electronics conference with a combination of energy-efficient enhancement mode and cascode-configured silicon substrate GaN platform

Infineon Technologies AG has recently expanded its silicon-based gallium nitride (GaN) technology and product lineup, marking a significant step forward in power semiconductor innovation. The company now offers enhanced mode and cascaded GaN platforms designed for ultra-high-performance applications, including power supplies for servers, telecom infrastructure, mobile charging solutions, and consumer electronics like Class D audio systems. GaN technology enables smaller and lighter power supplies, opening new possibilities for GaN integration in products such as ultra-thin LED TVs. Andreas Urschitz, President of Power Management and Diversification Markets at Infineon, emphasized that the combination of Infineon’s silicon-based GaN portfolio with its acquisition of General Motors’ GaN platform, along with its collaboration with Matsushita Electric Co., Ltd., has solidified Infineon’s leadership in the GaN market. As part of its “from product to system” strategy, Infineon allows customers to choose between enhanced mode or cascoded GaN solutions based on their system needs. The company is also focused on developing surface mount devices (SMDs) and integrated circuits (ICs), enabling GaN to deliver superior performance in more compact designs. For example, laptop chargers could be reduced to a quarter of their current size using GaN technology. Infineon’s expanded product range includes specialized driver and controller ICs that help maximize GaN’s benefits across various topologies and higher frequencies. Through its acquisition of International Rectifier, Infineon has strengthened its patent portfolio, silicon-based GaN epitaxial processes, and 100V-600V technology. In addition, the strategic partnership with Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. has led to the development of a normally-on (enhanced mode) silicon-based GaN transistor structure combined with Infineon’s SMD packaging. This collaboration introduces an easy-to-use, energy-efficient 600V GaN power device, offering customers convenience and flexibility. Infineon provides customers with comprehensive system knowledge and one of the most extensive GaN technology portfolios in the industry. Additionally, the company offers normally-on GaN power devices in Infineon’s SMD packages, backed by advanced manufacturing processes, mass production capabilities, and secondary sourcing options. Compared to traditional silicon solutions, silicon-based GaN technology enhances power density and efficiency while reducing device size. This makes it ideal for use in consumer electronics such as TV power supplies and Class D audio amplifiers, as well as in server and telecom equipment. According to a report from IHS, the market for silicon-based GaN power semiconductors is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 50%. By 2023, the market is projected to expand from $150 million in 2014 to $800 million. At the Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exhibition (APEC) in Charlotte, North Carolina, from March 15 to 19, 2015, Infineon and Matsushita Electric demonstrated 600V 70mΩ GaN device samples in DSO packages. Enhanced mode and cascode configuration devices were also on display. Customers can request samples of these devices under a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). Fully commercialized GaN devices with medium-voltage cascode structures are already available for Class D audio system customers.
