In recent developments, Huawei has been collaborating with SoftBank Group to create a networked robot aimed at accelerating the advancement of 5G technology. With the global population aging rapidly, service robots are emerging as key solutions for future needs.
Huawei Wireless X Labs and SoftBank recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focusing on connected robotics. The partnership aims to develop intelligent service robots using 5G technology, including the SoftBank-box autonomous mobile robot Cube and Kibako, starting in 2018.

As the global aging population continues to grow, by 2030, over 1.3 billion people will be aged 60 or older, making up 16% of the world's population. This increase highlights the growing demand for care services, where service robots can play a vital role. However, current service robots still need significant improvements in intelligence. To perform complex tasks like cargo delivery, natural language interaction, security inspection, and household chores, they must better understand their environment.
To enhance robotic intelligence, these cooperative robots will connect to cloud-based AI "brains" via 5G networks. The cloud AI will analyze the surroundings and send back instructions, allowing robots to operate more efficiently. With 5G’s high bandwidth, robots can transmit large volumes of data—such as machine vision and radar information—while offloading heavy AI computations to the cloud. This reduces the robot's size, power consumption, and cost while boosting its capabilities.
Through 5G, robots can also share data, enabling faster machine learning and AI development. SoftBank, known for its innovation in robotics, brings strong potential to this collaboration. The partnership combines cutting-edge network technology with advanced robotics, merging cloud AI with local intelligence.
Wang Yufeng, head of R&D at Huawei Wireless X Labs, emphasized that the “new 5G digital world view†is forming. Future applications will rely on the synergy between AI-powered terminals, mobile connectivity, and cloud AI. This demands ultra-high bandwidth for data transmission, ultra-low latency for control, precise positioning, and synchronized operations. The 5G network will provide real-time, reliable connections to meet diverse and evolving needs.
