In recent years, Huawei has been collaborating with SoftBank Group to develop a networked robot aimed at accelerating the advancement of 5G technology. As the global population ages, service robots are becoming increasingly essential, offering a promising solution to the rising demand for care and assistance.
In 2018, Huawei's Wireless X Labs and SoftBank signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on connected robotics. The collaboration involves deploying intelligent service robots powered by 5G technology, including SoftBank's Cube and Kibako autonomous mobile robots. This partnership highlights the growing synergy between advanced networking and robotic innovation.

The global aging trend is intensifying, with over 1.3 billion people aged 60 or older expected by 2030. This demographic shift is increasing the need for support systems, making service robots a key part of the solution. Current service robots, however, still require significant improvements in intelligence. To perform complex tasks such as cargo delivery, natural language interaction, security inspections, and even household chores, they must better understand and adapt to their surroundings.
To enhance their capabilities, these robots will connect to cloud-based AI "brains" via 5G networks. The cloud AI can analyze the environment and send back real-time data, allowing the robot to make informed decisions. Thanks to 5G’s high bandwidth and low latency, large volumes of data from cameras and sensors can be processed in the cloud rather than on the robot itself. This not only boosts AI performance but also reduces the robot’s size, power consumption, and cost.
Moreover, 5G enables robots to share data and continuously learn, driving the evolution of AI. SoftBank, known for its commitment to robotics innovation, brings valuable expertise to this partnership. Combining cutting-edge network technology with advanced robotics, the collaboration represents a powerful fusion of cloud AI and local intelligence.
Wang Yufeng, head of R&D at Huawei Wireless X Labs, emphasized that the "new 5G digital world view" is emerging, driven by the integration of AI-powered terminals, mobile connectivity, and cloud computing. This vision demands ultra-fast uplink data transmission, ultra-low latency control, precise positioning, and synchronized operations. The 5G network is poised to deliver reliable, real-time connectivity to meet a wide range of future needs.
