ADI introduces the LT8672, an active rectifier controller from Power by Linear™. This innovative device offers reverse input protection up to –40V and supports a wide input voltage range of 3V to 42V, making it ideal for automotive applications. It can handle low input voltages as low as 3.0V and manage load transients up to 40V, ensuring stable performance during cold starts and stop-start conditions.
The LT8672 drives an external N-channel MOSFET with a dropout voltage as low as 20mV, significantly reducing power consumption by over 90% compared to traditional Schottky diodes. This eliminates the need for costly heat sinks and improves system efficiency. The ultra-fast transient response ensures reliable operation even in demanding automotive environments that require AC input ripple rectification up to 100kHz.
With a quiescent current of just 20μA during operation and 3.5μA in shutdown mode, the LT8672 is well-suited for systems that must remain active at all times. Its compact MSOP-10 package, combined with external MOSFETs, delivers a space-efficient solution that meets the needs of modern automotive designs.
In case of input failure or a short circuit, the LT8672 quickly disconnects to minimize reverse current transients. The power good flag pin also signals when the external MOSFET is ready to accept load current, enhancing system reliability.
The LT8672EMS is available in an MSOP-10 package, while the industrial temperature grade LT8672IMS is guaranteed to operate between –40°C and 125°C. The LT8672HMS version extends this range up to 150°C, making it suitable for extreme automotive environments.
