Apple has recently been the subject of numerous rumors suggesting it's working on an AR headset. Some sources previously indicated that this device won't depend on the iPhone, as it will integrate both display and computing functions into a single unit. According to Apple’s internal roadmap, the design and finalization of this product were expected by 2019, with a planned launch in 2020. If successful, these AR glasses could mark Apple’s first major attempt to introduce a new form factor that might one day replace smartphones.
Many believe that 2020 is the ideal time for Apple to launch its AR glasses. However, some foreign media outlets reported that Apple’s supply chain partners have hinted at the possibility of launching an “important AR device†as early as 2019. While the report doesn’t explicitly name Apple, it connects the supplier’s recent activities with Apple’s growing interest in AR technology, making it highly likely that this device refers to the long-rumored Apple AR glasses.
In an interview, the vice president of Quanta Corp. revealed that the company is currently working on an AR project. They’ve spent at least two years researching the optical technologies required for such devices, and they expect to see similar products on the market no later than 2019. He also described the device as a "headset-sized gadget" featuring fully transparent lenses, allowing users to interact with their surroundings in real-time.
Quanta has a long history of manufacturing Apple products like the Apple Watch and MacBook, and Apple remains its largest client. Given this close relationship, it’s reasonable to assume that the AR device mentioned by Quanta is indeed the Apple AR glasses.
Like Tim Cook, who has often spoken about the potential of AR, the Quanta executive noted that while VR may gain popularity quickly, AR has more long-term potential in terms of applications and user engagement. He believes AR will bring more opportunities and innovation over time.
However, since the report doesn’t specify the name of the device, it could potentially be another product developed in collaboration with Quanta. Still, the details strongly suggest it's related to Apple.
According to Quanta, if the price of such a device stays under $1,000, it could achieve significant success in the market.
While many still consider AR glasses to be far off, Apple itself isn’t expecting them to replace smartphones overnight. Similar to how the Apple Watch faced skepticism when it was first launched, the initial version had its flaws. But after several years of refinement, it has now become one of the most popular smartwatches on the market.
If Apple does finally release its AR glasses next year, would you be excited to try them?
