In recent months, numerous rumors have circulated about Apple's potential development of AR glasses. Some earlier reports suggested that these glasses would not be dependent on the iPhone, as they would integrate both display and computing capabilities into a single, standalone device. According to Apple’s internal roadmap, the design and finalization of this product were expected to be completed by 2019, with an official launch planned for 2020. If realized, these AR glasses could represent Apple’s bold attempt to introduce a new paradigm that might one day replace smartphones.
Many believe that Apple is set to unveil its AR glasses in 2020, which seems like the most logical timing. However, some foreign media outlets have reported that Apple’s supply chain partners are expecting the release of an “important AR device†as early as 2019. While the report doesn’t explicitly name Apple, it highlights the close relationship between these suppliers and Apple, along with recent speculation about Tim Cook’s growing interest in AR technology. This has led many to believe that the device in question is likely the long-rumored Apple AR glasses.
During an interview, the vice president of Quanta Corp. revealed that the company is currently working on an AR project. He mentioned that they have been researching the necessary optical technologies for at least two years and expect such devices to hit the market no later than 2019. He also described the wearable as a "headset-sized gadget with fully transparent lenses," allowing users to see and interact with their surroundings in real time.
Quanta has long been a key supplier for Apple, assembling products like the Apple Watch and MacBook. Given their strong relationship with Apple, it’s highly plausible that this AR device is indeed the Apple AR glasses.
Like Tim Cook, Quanta’s executive believes that while VR may gain popularity quickly, AR has greater long-term potential for innovation and user engagement. However, it’s worth noting that since the report doesn’t specify the brand, this device could potentially belong to another company partnering with Quanta.
The vice president also mentioned that if the price remains under $1,000, the AR wearable could achieve significant success in the market.
Despite the excitement, many still consider AR glasses to be a distant future concept. Even Apple isn’t expecting them to replace smartphones overnight. Similar to how the Apple Watch faced skepticism when first released, it had initial flaws but eventually became a bestseller after years of refinement.
If Apple truly launches its AR glasses next year, would you be excited to try them?
