AMD Indian GPU boss vacation, netizens rating fried pan

[PConline News] In 2017, AMD made a strong comeback in the processor market and also made waves in the graphics card sector. The company launched the RX 500 series, which became popular among mainstream users, and introduced the high-end RX Vega lineup, including the Vega 64 water-cooled, air-cooled versions, and the Vega 56. These cards were positioned to compete directly with NVIDIA's GTX 1080 Ti, GTX 1080, and GTX 1070. With this product lineup, AMD had solidified its presence in the market. After wrapping up these major events, some AMD executives needed a break. Raja Koduri, the Chief Architect of the Radeon Technologies Group (RTG), announced he would take a two-month vacation before returning to work in November. During his absence, AMD CEO Su Zifeng will temporarily take over his responsibilities.

The news was confirmed by Pcper, which reported that Raja Koduri shared in an internal letter that he would step down from his current role on September 25th and then go on vacation. He mentioned that he would be back in November, though no exact schedule was given. While the announcement seemed light-hearted at first, it sparked mixed reactions from readers online. Many questioned whether the performance of the RX Vega lineup lived up to expectations, especially given its high power consumption and heat output, despite features like HBM 2 memory and the new NCU architecture. Some critics blamed Raja Koduri for the underperformance, while others defended him, acknowledging the complexity of GPU development.

Raja Koduri is not a household name for everyone, but he is a well-known figure in the tech world, particularly among those familiar with Silicon Valley’s Indian community. Before joining AMD in 2013, he worked at Apple, contributing to the development of their GPU technology. Upon returning to AMD, he played a crucial role in reorganizing the company and establishing the Radeon Technologies Group (RTG). As the SVP and Chief GPU Architect, he led the development of key architectures such as Hawaii, Fiji, Polaris, and finally Vega. His leadership has been instrumental in shaping AMD’s GPU roadmap.

While AMD has seen more success in the CPU market with Ryzen, the RX Vega series faced criticism for not matching the performance of NVIDIA’s top-tier GPUs. Despite its advanced features, the Vega cards struggled with efficiency and pricing. This has led to debates about whether AMD is on the right track in the GPU space. What do you think? Has AMD managed to make a real impact with Vega, or is there still a long way to go?
