AMD Indian GPU boss vacation, netizens rating fried pan

[PConline News] In 2017, AMD launched a strong comeback in the processor market and also made waves in the graphics card sector. The company introduced the RX 500 series, which became popular among mainstream users, and the high-end RX Vega lineup. The Vega series included three models: the water-cooled Vega 64, air-cooled Vega 64, and Vega 56. These cards were positioned to compete directly with NVIDIA's GTX 1080 Ti, GTX 1080, and GTX 1070. Now, AMD has completed its product roadmap for the year, and some executives are taking a break. Raja Koduri, the chief architect of the Radeon Technologies Group (RTG), announced that he will be on a two-month vacation before returning to work in November. During his absence, AMD CEO Lisa Su will take over his responsibilities.

The news was confirmed by PCPer, who reported that Raja Koduri sent an internal letter stating he would step down from his current role by September 25th and then go on vacation. He mentioned that his family would return in November, but no specific timeline was given for his return.

While many may not be familiar with Raja Koduri, he is a well-known figure in the tech world, especially within the GPU industry. Compared to AMD’s CEO Lisa Su, who is often referred to as “Su Ma” by Chinese fans, Raja is an Indian-American tech visionary. Before joining AMD in 2013, he worked at Apple, where he contributed to the development of their GPU technologies. After moving back to AMD, he played a key role in reorganizing the company and establishing the Radeon Technologies Group (RTG) in 2015. As the SVP and Chief GPU Architect, he led the development of several major GPU architectures, including Hawaii, Fiji, Polaris, and Vega.

The announcement about Raja Koduri's vacation was initially seen as a light-hearted moment, but it sparked mixed reactions from the community. Some readers criticized the performance of the RX Vega cards, pointing out that despite having advanced features like HBM 2 memory and a new NCU architecture, they failed to outperform NVIDIA’s 1080 series in terms of performance. Additionally, the Vega cards were criticized for high power consumption, heat output, and expensive pricing. Many comments on AnandTech suggested that Raja was to blame and even called for his resignation. However, others defended him, arguing that the challenges faced by the team were complex and not entirely his fault.

Looking back at AMD’s performance this year, the Ryzen processors have clearly outperformed their competitors in the CPU market, while the graphics division still faces tough competition. How do you feel about the RX Vega? Do you think it was a success or a disappointment? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
