(Original title: Bill Gates and Satya Nadella Disagree with Elon Musk on the Imminent AI Threat)
NetEase Technology News, September 26 – According to a report from VentureBeat, the question of who truly controls the robot remains a hot topic. In a recent interview, Microsoft founder Bill Gates and CEO Satya Nadella discussed how to continue managing this technology and how humans can benefit from building and using artificial intelligence (AI). Both expressed the belief that the AI threat has been overhyped and that any potential risks are far off, not something to worry about in the near future.
During the conversation, Gates specifically addressed Elon Musk, the American entrepreneur known for his concerns about AI. He said, “Musk is worried about the so-called AI control problem, but he doesn’t think it’s an urgent issue we should be panicking over. I disagree. His point is that we shouldn’t panic, but we also shouldn’t ignore the possibility that this issue might arise in the future.â€
Nadella echoed Gates’ perspective, emphasizing that while AI will grow significantly, it will always remain under human control. He stated, “The core principle guiding us right now is: How can we empower humans and enhance their abilities? Even in self-learning systems, many design decisions are still made by people. So we can ensure there are no biases or harmful data in these systems. I believe we have the power to shape our future, not just think about it. Control is a choice, and we must work hard to keep it.â€
Musk once tweeted that AI poses a greater danger than nuclear weapons. While his main goal may relate to setting guidelines, his message can be interpreted as “machines will eventually take over.†As you may know, most experts agree that AI will only do what we tell them to do. You can program robots to handle flower orders or candy deliveries. They won’t break through coding walls, interfere with your heating system, or send your car into a lake.
Beyond what humans instruct them to do, robots cannot act on their own. This is a moral boundary set by humanity. The idea of machines taking over is largely a Hollywood invention. However, as Gates pointed out, we should still stay alert. With today’s cars and home robots capable of executing highly complex and interconnected tasks, even a simple device like a garage door opener can trigger multiple actions—turning on lights, starting the heating, and even activating the oven.
As humans, we tend to focus on one thing at a time, which is actually a good thing. We have the ability to concentrate and block out distractions. While robots can process hundreds of tasks simultaneously, connecting devices and triggering multiple actions isn’t a major challenge in programming. But when robots start initiating thousands of actions at once, and we lose track of what’s connected and what it can do, that’s when we need to pay attention. That’s where AI guidelines come in. Staying vigilant is important, and Musk is right to raise these concerns.
