I’ve owned the X-PRO2 for over a year now. Prior to that, I had written a lengthy article titled “FUJIFILM Fuji X-Pro2 Opens a Wayward Journey – True Love Does Not Look at Cost-Effectiveness.†The article was well-received, and it garnered a lot of attention, especially since I mentioned how the X-PRO2 took me on adventures to places like Xiamen and Hong Kong, before settling down in my home city of Dalian. Despite the high-resolution images of the Nikon D810 being impressive, they couldn’t quite satisfy the charm of the X-PRO2’s photography. While there were moments where I considered ditching Nikon altogether and switching fully to Fuji, the idea never materialized because, well, love isn’t something you can easily let go of, especially when it’s tied to a camera that feels just right in your hands.
Final Purchase
After buying the 35/2 and 18/2 lenses, I finally decided to get the XF 23F1.4 R (selling the first two back to recover some costs). It cost me 4580 HKD through a purchasing service, which was actually cheaper than buying it domestically by around 500 yuan. Now, prices have gone up, and you can find it listed at 4980 yuan on some sites.
Fuji (FUJIFILM) XF23mm F1.4 R Wide-Angle Fixed-Focus Lens with Depth of Field Scale and Evaluation of Coke Ring Humanity Weapon Documentary Necessary 5799 Yuan Early Meeting on Jingdong
The reason I chose this lens was due to the beautiful impression I had of the 35mm field of view when using the Sigma 35ART on a full-frame camera. However, the actual usage of the Fuji XF23 head differs significantly from the Sigma 35ART. This difference arises because when the physical focal length becomes shorter, the depth of field increases, making it harder to separate the foreground and background during shooting.
The following image shows a pile of Nikon lenses on the mid-level camera, with my XF23 in front. The craftsmanship is exquisite, and it feels cold and heavy in hand. If there’s one shortcoming, I’d say it could be slightly larger. Without the square original hood, it doesn’t feel particularly portable. I haven’t bought this hood yet (due to budget constraints), but if you pair it with the extended plastic hood…you’ll forgive all its shortcomings.
Talk About Feelings
Overall, the imaging of the XF23F1.4 can be described as "dependable"—most of the time it provides a clear impact from the center to the edges—but there are two notable exceptions: 1) Infinity focus; 2) Dark-light snapshots.
In the first case (infinity focus), the XF23's imaging deteriorates to a certain extent. The image knots appear unrealistic, and its sharpness decreases. Therefore, when used to take photos of large scenes, the XF23 lacks some combat power. The following figure shows the XF23 connected to three pieces. While reducing sharpness is good, it’s still hard to accept after 100% magnification.
After being out of infinity focus, the landscape resolution of this shot remains excellent. As shown below, zooming in on the details of the pylon maintains good sharpness and resolution.
The dark-light snapshot weakness in the second case stems from the weak focusing performance of the R head without LM. Admittedly, in the dark environment, the shutter can be successfully focused after several presses, but when you need to capture quickly, the success rate of focusing drops significantly in the fleeting moment, even if you're using Fujifilm's top focus system (I don't own an XT2, so I'm unsure if it has improved).
Once out of these two situations, you'll be happy to shoot it, and it won't disappoint your ideas and creativity. The quality can meet the criteria for occasions such as canopy creative gallery sales, and it’s also suitable for picking up a bicycle.
For example, immediate food:
Or roadside flowers and grass:
Or touching mottled light:
Or recording the beauty of life and family:
It will always be your faithful helper.
To Sum Up
The XF23 is a reliable lens with a field of view similar to human eyesight. Although sometimes it might feel that the focal length is a bit short, it’s more practical to use it with an 18-55, and sometimes it will be swapped out, but overall, the image quality, size, and perspective make it hard to find a better alternative. It has captured too much of the beauty of my life and will continue to do so. Its disadvantages are clear, as are its advantages. It should be fairly aptly described as love. Searching for Fuji XF23’s works on the internet reveals not many moving pictures. In the Fuji forum, I once initiated an online "Tailored Open [Fuji 23mm] Club," convening 23 enthusiasts, collecting 23 excellent images, and having fun with friends.
