The world is increasingly embracing ultra-high-definition devices. The global 4K ultra-high-definition market is experiencing rapid growth, with projections indicating that by 2025, the global 4K TV market could reach $388.9 billion. China has become the world's largest market for 4K TVs, with both a vast consumer base and manufacturing capacity exceeding half of global production.
Last year, the "13th Five-Year Plan for the Development of National Strategic Emerging Industries" issued by the State Council emphasized the importance of developing new application chips and achieving domestic breakthroughs in ultra-high-definition (4K/8K) technologies like quantum dot LCDs.
TCL Group, headquartered in Guangdong and a leader in China's home appliance manufacturing, is at the forefront of 4K industry development. Recently, the "Guangdong Province 4K TV Network and Industrial Development Implementation Plan (2017-2020)" was released. This plan aims to build a robust supply chain that supports China's 4K development.
"The Panel King" Leading Innovation: The Next Big Thing?
Shenzhen Guangming New Area has seen significant progress in the construction of the $50 billion-plus G11 project by TCL Huaxing Optoelectronics. This project represents the largest single industrial investment in Shenzhen's history and focuses on high-end panel research and development, including 4K technology. According to TCL officials, it took just five months from project approval to groundbreaking. The main plant is scheduled for completion in December 2017, with production starting in late 2018 and full-scale operations beginning in Q1 2019.
When users enjoy 4K products, the display at the front end of the supply chain is undoubtedly the most noticeable part. Many users first encounter 4K through the resolution and quality of the display screen, which are determined by panel technology. The development of panels has always been seen as the cutting-edge technology of color TV manufacturing, with 4K and other ultra-high-definition panels viewed as the next frontier.
Market research shows that global sales of 4K TV panels reached 63.74 million units in 2016, representing a year-on-year growth rate of 70%, with market share increasing to 24.7%. Globally, LG and Samsung remain leaders in high-end panel development. However, China's 4K panels are now attempting to lead innovation. According to market research firm Quzhi Consulting, in 2016, China Star Optoelectronics and BOE shipped 4.68 million and 4.1 million 4K TV panels, respectively, capturing 7.4% and 6.4% of the global market share.
As a leading home appliance company based in Guangdong, TCL Group's panel production projects are at the forefront, providing solid hardware support for China's 4K industry development. The G11 project is just one of many panel production initiatives by TCL Group. Last month, TCL Huaxing Optoelectronics' 6th generation flexible LTPS-AMOLED display panel production line (the "t4 project") began construction in Wuhan. The t4 project plans to produce 45,000 large glass substrates per month, primarily focusing on display panels for 3"-12" high-resolution flexible and foldable smartphones.
"Semiconductor chips and displays are the most technologically and financially intensive areas of the electronics industry. China's semiconductor display industry is building a strong competitive edge. Our goal is to make TCL Huaxing Optoelectronics the world's most competitive semiconductor display panel company," said TCL Group Chairman Li Dongsheng.
"Made in China" Breaks Monopolies: Huawei's HiSilicon Ships Nearly 10 Million Chips Last Year
While 4K displays have gained popularity, the video chips that support 4K imaging are less well-known. The complete video processing workflow involves four stages: video capture, video processing, video transmission, and video display. Each stage is interconnected, with video processing being the most critical. Video processing includes video codecs, deinterlacing, and format conversion, with chip performance being key to success.
Huawei HiSilicon's hi3751V600 and hi3751V510 chips have become the "hearts" of many brands' 4K TVs, including Sharp, Hisense, Konka, and others. This was unimaginable just a few years ago.
According to Zhang Yi, chief analyst at Aimei Consulting, since 2005, numerous American semiconductor and electronic companies like TI, Anba, NXP, Taiwan's TEWELL, and Japan's SONY and SHARP have focused on video codec chip R&D, significantly advancing the market.
However, prior to 2010, domestically developed chips were mostly prototypes or self-used, with low market acceptance. At that time, domestic chips accounted for only about 1%, while foreign chips dominated at over 95%. TI held nearly half of China's market. The reasons included foreign manufacturers' extensive experience and long-term investment in this field, along with domestic chip stability needing improvement. Thus, video industry manufacturers predominantly chose foreign chips.
Zhang Yi noted, "In the past two years, the situation has changed dramatically. Companies like Huawei HiSilicon have emerged." Established in October 2004, HiSilicon is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Huawei, headquartered in Shenzhen with design divisions in Beijing, Shanghai, Silicon Valley, and Sweden. HiSilicon's products cover wireless networks, fixed networks, and digital media, successfully deployed in over 100 countries and regions.
According to HiSilicon officials, its video encoding and decoding chip systems are comprehensive, ranging from 3518A at 65nm to 3519 at 28nm. Products cater to consumer, commercial, and industrial markets, with resolutions from D1 to the latest 4K and frame rates up to 60fps.
This reporter learned that the domestic market share of China's chips has risen to about 60%, compared to just 1% a decade ago, while foreign chips now account for about 35%. HiSilicon holds more than half of the domestic market, shipping nearly 10 million independent ultra-high-definition smart TV core chips in 2016, entering the supply chains of six domestic color TV manufacturers.
"Over the past decade, Huawei HiSilicon has been 'retroactively' working in the field of video chips, breaking the monopolies of foreign giants, reducing the cost of high-end chips, and integrating 'China Core' into many branded products," industry sources told reporters.
Whole Machines Benefit Thousands of Households: Sales Ahead of Time
The rise of domestic panels and chips has brought 4K TV product prices closer to the public. Just a few years ago, 4K TVs were priced in tens of thousands of yuan, with some even nearing 100,000 yuan, deterring many consumers. However, in recent years, the overall price of 4K TVs has dropped, making them more accessible to ordinary families.
According to statistics from market research organization Ovid Cloud Network, 42.5 million TVs were sold in China's domestic market in 2016 (with domestic brand sales reaching 20.349 million units, accounting for 92.8%), representing 48% of total TV sales, twice the global average.
Data shows that in 2016, China sold approximately 26 million 4K TV units, making it the world's largest market; it is expected that by 2018, China's 4K TV sales will account for more than 60% of total sales, maintaining its global leadership; by 2020, it is expected to reach 44 million units. North America and Western Europe, as the second and third largest 4K TV markets, are projected to have a combined sales forecast of only 44.9 million units in 2020.
As the largest TV manufacturer in the province, TCL, Skyworth, and Konka, Guangdong's color TV production centers accounted for 51% of the country's total color TV production in 2016, producing 76.2107 million LCD TVs, nearly half of the national total. Appliance analyst Liu Buchen explained to reporters that this is largely due to the ongoing decline in China's color TV market scale in early 2017, driven by rising raw material costs and the low-price strategies of internet brands. Under these circumstances, the restructuring of the color TV industry has become standard practice, with major players upgrading their reforms and seeking new opportunities.
Skyworth Digital Holdings Executive Director Liu Weizhi revealed that Skyworth will focus on product upgrades and channel adjustments, prioritizing 4K televisions. It is reported that in the 2016/17 fiscal year, Skyworth's domestic 4K smart TV sales increased by 54% year-over-year, with plans to boost domestic 4K smart TV sales to 55% in the 2017/18 fiscal year.
Our investigation found that the price of 4K TV products, including domestic brands like Skyworth, has fallen below 10,000 yuan, with several thousand-yuan models gaining popularity among users. 4K TVs made in Guangdong are now appearing in living rooms across the country.
