MicroLED has "very difficult 500 days", what about the Mini LED?

In the ever-evolving world of display technology, Micro LED and Mini LED have emerged as two of the most talked-about innovations. Industry experts suggest that these technologies may even surpass OLED in certain performance aspects, signaling a promising future for both. While some see them as potential game-changers, others view them as stepping stones toward more advanced solutions. Micro LED, in particular, is often described as a "500-day challenge" by industry insiders—meaning that it will take about 18 months to determine whether it can truly move from research to commercialization. Despite the challenges, many believe that Micro LED represents a qualitative leap in image quality and could be the next major revolution in display tech. A senior executive at Lianchuang Optoelectronics has stated that Mini LED is merely a transitional solution, with Micro LED being the ultimate goal. Compared to Micro LED, Mini LED is seen as more feasible in the short term. It is less complex, easier to mass-produce, and offers better cost efficiency. When used as a backlight for LCD panels, Mini LED can provide brightness and image quality similar to OLED while consuming less power. According to market estimates, Mini LED backlit TVs could cost 60–80% less than OLED models, making them an attractive option for consumers. Major players in the supply chain, including Jingyuan Optoelectronics, Huacan Optoelectronics, and Sanan Optoelectronics, are actively investing in Mini LED technology. Companies like Epistar have already started producing Mini LEDs, with high-end LCD TVs and smartphones expected to be among the first devices to adopt this technology. Huacan Optoelectronics, one of China’s leading chip manufacturers, has also accelerated its efforts in the Mini LED space. The company has begun supplying small quantities of Mini LED chips to international clients, and as production costs decrease, demand for these chips is expected to grow rapidly. However, despite the enthusiasm, Mini LED still faces several technical hurdles. One of the main challenges lies in the flip-chip process, which is essential for achieving ultra-dense packaging. Controlling the process, ensuring flatness, and optimizing electrode design are all critical factors that impact reliability and maintenance costs. For backlight applications, Mini LED must meet strict thickness requirements, which adds complexity to the design. Achieving consistent light output and maintaining uniformity over time remain key challenges. In RGB display applications, additional issues arise, such as brightness uniformity under low current and color consistency across different chips. Moreover, due to the small size of Mini LED chips, they are typically used in full-scale mode, which limits operational efficiency. As demand increases, especially when dealing with hundreds of thousands of chips, efficiency becomes a major bottleneck. Collaborating closely with application partners to improve productivity is now a top priority. While the commercialization of Micro LED remains uncertain, the rapid development of Mini LED is paving the way for future advancements in display technology. With more companies working to overcome the current limitations, the next chapter in visual innovation may be just around the corner.

65W Power Bank
