Nearly 30% of medium-sized headlights in the United States failed test results

According to Reuters, the US Highway Safety Insurance Association (IIHS) released a set of headlight test results on Wednesday. A total of 31 mid-size cars participated in the test, and one-third of the mid-size cars failed to pass the test, while the Toyota Prius V performed well with the optional upgraded headlights.

Of the 31 US midsize vehicles participating in this headlamp test, 11 mid-size cars have passed the test, including Audi A3, Honda Accord, Nissan Maxima (North American version of Cefiro); nine mid-size cars on the edge of the passing line; Medium-sized cars have lower ratings, including Kia Optima (Korean/K5), Chevrolet Mai Rui Bao, and Volkswagen Passat. Among them, the Toyota Prius V received the highest rating. The car is equipped with an optional LED headlight. When there is a car on the opposite side, the Prius V can turn off the high beam.

The test includes: the degree of illumination of the vehicle headlights, and whether it will cast too strong glare on the opposite vehicle. Because the IIHS score has a greater impact on consumers, automakers expect a higher score in the test.

On Tuesday, the US Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in a statement that the revised new car evaluation program will prompt automakers to improve headlight performance. Its spokesperson, Bryan Thomas, said NHTSA is committed to promoting higher vehicle safety standards, including headlamp systems.

A spokesman for the American Automobile Manufacturers Association (AAM) declined to comment.

In a report released in 2007, NHTSA pointed out that 49% of car accident deaths occurred at night, and late-night driving accounted for 25% of all driving behavior. Because of the driver's subjective factors such as speeding and drunk driving due to late-night driving death, it is impossible to accurately determine the fatality rate of the headlight problem.
