Water Cube: The only Olympic venue with full LED lighting

“LED landscape lighting is the last process of the Water Cube's entire system project. Just like building a house, the house is well structured and needs to be renovated. “Water Cube” is the only Olympic venue in landscape lighting that uses LED lighting. When standing in front of the water cube of the steel frame, Zhu Xiaodong and three other experts took a look at the Water Cube with a professional eye and years of practical experience. “It is the most suitable lighting carrier for LED performance.” Because it has the most special architectural structure – the world's largest membrane structure, it is a world in conception and styling, and requires a very special artistic expression. LED itself is a high-tech, and it is still in large-scale experiments, and there is not enough experience to learn from. Zhu Xiaodong said: "It is rare to build such a large-scale membrane building abroad, and even the world's largest stadium has not dared to get involved in large-scale application of LED landscape lighting."

In response to this project, the state issued the 863 program major scientific research project "National Swimming Center Semiconductor Lighting Scale System Integration Technology Research", thirteen as the deputy head of the research group, presided over the two sub-projects of LED light source and lighting, reliability research, Participated in the study of two sub-topics of landscape lighting technology and lighting control system.

After many demonstrations, it overcomes one of the technical problems in the field of architectural landscape lighting, high-power LED application and LED distributed control. The research team finally decided to adopt the light-transmitting illumination method in the cavity. Each of the bubbles is equipped with LED lights, and the light beams are redistributed and arranged without affecting the overall luminous flux of the lamps through custom-developed primary and secondary optical lenses.

“It is a challenging subject to use LED landscape lighting for membrane structure buildings. This unprecedented architectural lighting engineering practice has made the largest landscape lighting project for semiconductor lighting units worldwide.” Zhu Xiaodong said that LEDs are unique.
