Last year, Wal-Mart launched Store 8, a technology incubator focused on researching and investing in cutting-edge innovations such as augmented and virtual reality. The latest move in this direction is the acquisition of Spatialand, a VR startup known for creating tools that help enterprises develop high-quality virtual content.
According to a recent blog post from Wal-Mart, KaTIe Finnegan, who is both the founder and chief of Store 8, will also take on the role of interim CEO at Spatialand. This dual leadership aims to ensure seamless integration between the two organizations as they work together to push the boundaries of what's possible in retail through virtual environments.
Earlier this year, Spatialand partnered with Store 8 to create a virtual reality event for Innov8, Wal-Mart’s innovation incubation program. This event was seen as a milestone, showcasing the potential of VR to revolutionize how people shop in the future.
Finnegan shared that the new team will collaborate closely with Spatialand’s co-founder, Kim Cooper, and Store 8 consultant Jeremy Welt. Together, they plan to explore new ways to use VR in retail, aiming to integrate it into every aspect of Wal-Mart’s business, from customer engagement to product development.
Kim Cooper, a two-time Emmy nominee, has led Spatialand in creating innovative VR experiences for major brands like Oculus, Intel, Reebok, and even Linkin Park. Her expertise brings a strong creative and technical foundation to the partnership.
Jeremy Welt, a renowned VR strategist and product consultant, has previously worked on groundbreaking projects, including YouTube’s first commercial deal and helping Disney acquire Maker Studios. He also consults for 360 video platforms like Splash and Mindshow, which are used in VR film production.
With this acquisition, Wal-Mart is not just experimenting with VR — it’s making a long-term commitment to shaping the future of retail through immersive technology.
