For long-time BlackBerry fans, this might come as a shocking moment. According to a recent statement from a senior executive at BlackBerry, the company is moving forward with the future being "Android." This means that the BlackBerry 10 operating system may soon be phased out.
In India, during the launch of BlackBerry’s first Android device, Damian Tay, Senior Director of Product Management for Asia Pacific, said, “We’ve made the Android system more secure. It doesn’t make sense to offer two different operating systems, so the only platform for BlackBerry will likely be Android.â€
Although current BlackBerry 10 users might feel reassured, as CEO John Chen mentioned that BlackBerry 10.3, which offers enhanced security, would be released in 2016, the future of the platform looks uncertain. The chances of seeing a brand-new version of BlackBerry 10 are very slim.
At CES 2016, Chen also stated that BlackBerry plans to release one or two new smartphones this year, but they will run on the Android platform.
With the rapid growth of Android, even Apple's iOS faces significant challenges. Microsoft’s Windows Phone and BlackBerry 10 have struggled to gain traction in the market. Interestingly, both Microsoft and BlackBerry once dominated the mobile industry—alongside Nokia, which believed that technology should serve humanity. This shows how difficult it is not only to start a business, but also to sustain it in such a competitive environment.
