The new energy vehicle market is growing rapidly. While the traditional fuel vehicle market is experiencing a downturn, China’s new energy sector continues to see high growth. According to data from the China Automobile Association, in June alone, new energy vehicle production reached 65,000 units, while sales hit 59,000. From January to June this year, total production was 212,000, and sales reached 195,000—both up by 19.7% and 14.4% respectively compared to the same period last year. Pure electric vehicles saw even stronger growth, with production and sales rising by 30.4% and 26.2%, respectively.

Industry experts predict that unless there are major policy changes, the new energy vehicle market will not experience a sudden surge this year. However, annual sales are expected to reach 600,000 to 700,000 units. The growth of new energy passenger vehicles remains stable, while commercial vehicles may bring additional volatility to the market. Xu Yanhua, vice secretary-general of the China Automobile Association, stated that achieving a target of 700,000 units in 2017 is still feasible.

BAIC and BYD dominate the Beijing new energy vehicle market, together accounting for over 60% of sales. In the first five months of this year, Beijing sold 22,000 new energy vehicles. Beiqi New Energy led with 40% of the market, followed closely by BYD with over 20%. Changan and Geely accounted for around 10% each, placing them third and fourth.

Looking at specific models, Beiqi New Energy’s EC180 became the most popular in Beijing with nearly 4,200 units sold in the first five months. Other models such as BYD e5, Beiqi New Energy EU260, Changan Benben EV, and Geely Emgrand also exceeded 2,000 sales. As private ownership of new energy vehicles increases, automakers are expanding their product lines to meet diverse consumer needs.

Geely and Changan have been steadily pushing forward in the new energy space. For example, Changan’s Benben EV ranks second only to BYD e5 and Beiqi EC180 in Beijing. Despite current production limitations, Changan plans to increase output to over 2,000 units per month, aiming for a market share of 10%-12% once capacity is fully released.

Geely has made new energy vehicles a core part of its strategy. In 2015, it launched the “Blue Geely Action,” aiming to achieve an average fuel consumption of 5.0L/100km by 2020. By 2020, Geely expects new energy vehicle sales to exceed 90% of its total, with plug-in hybrids making up 65% and pure electric vehicles 35%. Its first pure electric model, Emgrand EV, has already gained significant traction in the market.

Roewe ERX5 entered Beijing in just four days and already broke the 3,000 order mark. This all-electric internet SUV features a 425 km range, 80% charge in 40 minutes, and advanced internet systems. It has quickly become a top choice for consumers, showing strong demand for high-quality new energy vehicles.

GAC Chuanqi’s GE3 is another strong contender in the high-end new energy market. With a starting price of 222,800 yuan after subsidies, it offers a long-range battery, smart technology, and a luxurious interior. GE3 aims to satisfy the growing demand for premium electric SUVs and is positioned to compete directly with models like Beiqi EX and Jianghuai iEV6S.
