In a week, Tencent Digital (An An) launched GoPro Karma and Dajiang Mavic Pro, which may be the most popular drones this quarter and even this year. Both drones are collapsible and can shoot 4K video. There are some fascinating places and some disappointing places. If you have to let me recommend it, it might be GoPro Karma, but it is by no means without reservation.
Dajiang Mavic Pro
Mavic is quite small and can be placed in the palm of your hand. The robot arm can be folded and retracted into the fuselage. The propeller can also be folded and the design is smart. The remote control is very small, there is no built-in display, you have to connect the phone to use, this design makes the use more complicated. When it comes to complexity, the menu system is a bit tedious for amateurs.
Although Mavic is small, it does a great job. Because of the installation of visual and acoustic sensors, it can avoid obstacles and improve stability, as well as indoors. Charging a drone can fly for 27 minutes, weighing only 2 pounds, a maximum coverage of 4 miles and a top speed of 40 miles per hour.
The focus is on the camera. The sharpness of the images taken by the DJI drone camera is not enough, the colors are a little faded, and the dynamic range is somewhat narrow. If you use the automatic mode to shoot, you cannot accurately determine the lighting environment in many cases. Compared with the flagship UAV Phantom 4, GoPro Hero camera, Mavic's camera has the same size, are 12 million pixels 1/2.3 inch image sensor, but its image quality is behind because of the smaller optical device, the quality is slightly difference. Mavic Pro has a very narrow viewing angle of only 79 degrees, Phantom 4 reaches 94 degrees, and GoPro Hero reaches 165 degrees. The Karma drone uses the GoPro Hero camera. On several occasions, I photographed in a specific environment and found that the inside of the lens was easily misty, resulting in unclear images.
Mavic Pro offers numerous control features that advanced users may like, but novices will feel inscrutable. In a few environments, text will appear on the screen to help, but reading text on the iPhone is too small. The smart flight mode is hard to master, and the performance is not very good. For example, there is a mode that allows the user to select someone on the phone screen, and then let the drone track this person, allowing people to stay in the frame. According to my test, only half of the opportunities function properly.
Among the drones I've seen, the design of Mavic Pro is the most enjoyable. If you spend $1,000 to buy a drone, you should expect it to produce eye-catching images. The main function of drones is to use for photography, and Mavic Pro is missing this point.
GoPro Karma
Similarly, the GoPro Karma can also be folded, and a backpack can carry a drone with him. The GoPro Karma is twice the size of the Mavic Pro and weighs twice as much. Don't give up Karma because of the heavy burden, because its image quality is quite good. Karma uses a GoPro camera and is compatible with Hero 4 Silver, Hero 4 Black, Hero 5 Black and the upcoming Hero 5 Session. These cameras can produce first-class images, and with it, your aerial photography will go upstairs.
Karma is not just a drone. You can remove the waterproof GoPro Hero camera and install it on surfboards, helmets, bicycles and dogs. Everything can be done. In other respects, Karma drones are not as good as Mavic Pro. For example, Karma had only 18 minutes of poor flight time, Mavic had 27 minutes, Karma had only 2 miles, which was half less than Mavic; Karma had only 35 miles per hour and Mavic had reached 40 miles.
For a novice, it may be better for the drone to be slower, but Karma has no obstacles to avoid the technology and cannot track the goal of the move: these two automated functions are quite practical, making it easier to fly and shoot. Karma does have some cool automatic flying features, such as Dronie, which allows the drone to quickly dive to complete the self-timer; Orbit mode can rotate 360 ​​degrees around you or a target, pointing the camera at the interior; and Reveal In the mode, the drone can climb up the canyon wall to take a picture; finally there is the cable cab mode, which can shoot back and forth between two fixed points.
The drone can be returned to the starting point, or it can fly to the current position of the remote control. If the aircraft is departing from the ship, this function is quite practical. Karma drones are also expensive. If you have already purchased a GoPro camera, it can be used on Karma drones and costs only $800, including drones, stabilizing balance rings, remote controls, and backpacks. If you don't have a GoPro camera, you can purchase the entire package. If you are buying the Hero5 Session, you will have to pay $1,000. If it is Hero5 Black, it costs $1,100.
If you purchase a GoPro drone and camera separately, you will be charged $100 more than the entire purchase. I think buying Hero5 Black is the best deal because it has better shooting quality than Session. By paying $150 more, Karma drones can get GoPro Care services, which is equivalent to buying drones for 2 years.
Karma is very good
Indeed, Karma has some limitations, some limitations are still very important, though, I still recommend GoPro Karma instead of Mavic Pro. why? Because GoPro Karma is more versatile and easier to use. If it is advanced players, they should be advised to choose Mavic Pro, but advanced players may be more concerned with image quality.
