Big event: DNS service was attacked by most of the Internet in Europe and America

On the morning of October 21st, US time, many Western users suddenly found that social networking sites including Twitter and Tumblr could not log in. In addition, websites such as CNN, SpoTIfy, and WSJ were also unable to log in.

Dynamic Network Service (Dyn), which serves these sites, said its domain name system (dns) service suffered a massively distributed "Denial-of-service" attack from 7 am on Friday. After the first round of attacks was resolved, Dyn said that he had a second round of attacks at noon that day.

The following is a list of some of the affected sites:

ActBlue, Basecamp, Big cartel, Box, Business Insider, CNN, Cleveland.com, Etsy, Github, Grubhub, Guardian.co.uk, HBO Now, Iheart.com (iHeartRadio), Imgur, Intercom, Intercom.com, Okta, PayPal, People.com, Pinterest, PlaystaTIon Network, Recode, Reddit, Seamless, SpoTIfy, Squarespace Customer Sites, Starbucks rewards/gift cards, Storify.com, The Verge, Twillo, Twitter, UrbanicTIonary.com (lol), Weebly, Wired .com, Wix Customer Sites, Yammer, Yelp, Zendesk.com, Zoho CRM, Credit Karma, Eventbrite, Netflix, NHL.com, Fox News, Disqus, Shopify, Soundcloud, Atom.io, Ancersty.com, ConstantContact, Indeed. Com, New York Times, Weather.com, WSJ.com, time.com, xbox.com, dailynews.com, Wikia, donorschoose.org, Wufoo.com, Genonebiology.com, BBC, Elder Scrolls Online, Eve Online, PagerDuty , Kayakyouneedabudget.com, Speed Test, Freshbooks, Braintree, Blue Host, Qualtrics, SBNation, Salsify.com, Zillow.com, nimbleschedule .com, Vox.com, Livestream.com, IndieGoGo, Fortune, CNBC.com, FT.com, Survey Monkey, Paragon Game

The Network Domain Name System (dns) can be understood as the "phone book" of the Internet and is the basic service for processing web page requests. After the user enters the web address in the web browser, the address resolution service of the dns will be able to bring the user to the destination of the webpage to be opened, and the network hacker attacks the normal network usage of the user by attacking the dns service.

DNS

The "Denial-of-service" attack method is to "block" the user's normal login by stacking a large amount of garbage data.

As a dns service provider, Dyn provides underlying services to a large number of Internet companies, including Twitter. As of now, Dyn has not revealed the specific source of the attack. Dyn spokesperson Adam Coughlin said the company is tracking down the source of the attack, possibly in the US East Coast region.

The massive cyberattack even caught the attention of the US Department of Homeland Security, a spokesperson for the department, Todd Breasseal, said he was investigating "all kinds of potential causes" that might launch an attack.

As of 12:00 pm on the 21st, the majority of websites have returned to normal, but there are still some websites, including Twitter and WSJ, which still have problems such as slow webpage opening and inability to refresh content.

Last week, the US Department of Homeland Security issued an early warning pointing out this powerful new hacking attack. At the time, the US Department of Homeland Security also pointed out that the agency was concerned that such malicious programs that could be used by hackers to launch cyber attacks on the Internet could be exploited by hackers to launch large-scale cyber attacks.

Later on Friday, Dyn claimed that he was fighting a third wave of attacks and said that the attacks had spread from the United States to the world, making it even more difficult to confront. Kyle York, Dyn's chief strategy officer, said, "The complexity of this hacking poses a huge challenge."

The US Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Bureau of Investigation claimed that they were investigating the hacking incident.

The hacking incident coincides with the unprecedented fear of cyber threats in the United States. It is important to know that in the United States, many political institutions and electoral institutions have been attacked by hackers.

Dyn claims that the company has resolved a wave of hacking attacks in the morning on Friday (Editor's Note: US time), which caused some websites to crash for about two hours, but Dyn added that it was solving this problem. A few hours after the wave attack, it was attacked by a second wave of hackers, and this attack caused more website downtime.

Earlier on Friday, Dyn said that the website crash caused by the hacking attack only occurred in the eastern United States. Later, Amazon reported that this issue also affected users in Western Europe. For example, some users in the London area could not log in to Twitter and some news websites.

PayPal also claimed that this downtime caused some customers in "specific regions" to be unable to pay through the PayPal website. Although PayPal apologized to the user for the inconvenience caused to the user, it claimed that the PayPal website itself was not hacked.

Amazon's web service channel also reported another related downtime news, but this downtime was resolved on Friday afternoon in US time.

Dyn claims that the company is still trying to investigate how this hacking has caused a lot of website downtime. However, for Dyn, its first priority is to quickly resume service.
