Samsung note7 iris recognition is safer than fingerprint recognition?

Samsung's latest Galaxy Note 7 continues all the features of the Note series smartphone: large screen, waterproof, and S Pen stylus. However, this new model also has a long-standing new feature that is gradually entering the consumer electronics field: iris scanning.

Samsung note7 iris recognition is safer than fingerprint recognition?

The Galaxy Note 7 uses an infrared camera module and a distance sensor to identify whether the user has lifted the phone in front of it (distance 25 to 35 cm). This camera quickly scans the user's iris and then unlocks the device based on biometric data stored on the phone. In addition, Note 7 users can also save personal documents such as copies of contracts or passports in a secure folder on their mobile phones that can only be unlocked by iris scanning.

Samsung said: iris scanning is not the most important security function of this smart phone, but an additional security protection combined with the widely used fingerprint sensor, users can choose whether to use or not. However, the addition of iris scanning occurs when the security of the smartphone fingerprint sensor is tested. Authorities, researchers, and hackers have demonstrated that 3D printed models based on personal fingerprint images can be used to unlock fingerprint-protected smartphones.

Iris scanning can't be completely restless – even Samsung doesn't insist that iris scanning is safer than fingerprint scanning – but some researchers point out that the great randomness makes it difficult for the iris to be forged. (Iris scanning is also a controversial topic, and government agencies have not fully evaluated the impact on privacy when launching an iris-based pilot project.)

Red film scanning is entering the consumer electronics arena. Microsoft's Windows-based Lumia 950 and 950XL smartphones, as well as Windows 10 laptops that support Windows Hello, now have iris scanning capabilities; there are also reports that future iPhones may increase iris scanning.

However, in the short term, Samsung may be a smartphone maker that has made iris scanning a mainstream trend. It is reported that Samsung's Galaxy S7 flagship phone sold iPhone in the US in the first quarter, while Samsung claimed that "tablet phone" is the fastest growing category among its smartphone products. Of course, iris scanning is just an auxiliary feature on Note 7, but users may soon become accustomed to it.
