The latest research nanowire LED can be commercialized within five years

According to research by the Niels Bohr Institute (NBI) at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, LEDs made from nanowires provide a brighter light source with less energy.

Researchers have delved into nanowires using X-ray microscopy, and researchers have been able to determine how to design nanowires to provide optimal performance. The findings were published in the ACS Nano scientific journal.

The nanowires are about 2 microns high (μm; 1 μm is 1/1000 mm) and have a diameter of about 10-500 nm (nm, 1 nm about 1/1000 μm). The nanowires for LEDs are composed of an internal gallium nitride (GaN) core and an outer layer of indium gallium nitride (InGaN), both of which are semiconductor materials.

The source of such a diode relies on the presence of mechanical strain between the two materials, which is greatly dependent on how the two layers of material contact each other. Robert Feidenhansl, professor at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and director of the Bohr Institute, explained that we have studied a variety of nanowires using X-ray microscopy, even the same nanowires in principle, and we can see the differences and their differences. Structure.

Related research was carried out using nanoscale X-ray microscopy at the German Electronic Synchrotron Research Institute (DESY) electronic synchrotron in Hamburg, Germany. While this approach is quite time consuming, and the results are often very limited or even only meet a single research topic. However, the special design of nanoscale X-rays allows nanowires to be destroyed during the process, allowing researchers to simultaneously measure a range of nanowires simultaneously.

The X-ray image of each nanowire shows the distribution of the scattering intensity, as well as the mechanical strain at the outer layer of the gallium nitride core and the gallium indium nitride. According to this strain, the outer layer fits perfectly with the core.

“We measured 20 nanowires, and we were very surprised when we saw the image, because you can clearly see the details of each nanowire, including the core and outer layers. If there are Any defects or slight bends will not work properly. Therefore, we can accurately find out which are the best quality nanowires and have the most efficient core/shell structure," University of Copenhagen, Bohr Institute, "neutrons and X-rays." Tomas Stankevic, Ph.D. student of the Scattering Research Group, explained.

Robert Feidenhans'l said that nanowires will bring a more natural light source to LEDs and will also use lower power consumption. In addition, they can be applied to smartphones, televisions, and various forms of lighting.

Researchers expect this nanowire LED lighting to be commercially available within five years.
