By eliminating the high cost of connecting fiber to each customer, FTTdp is the most economical network topology for many operators that have invested in fiber distribution lines. On a short copper loop in a hybrid FTTdp network, VDSL2 technology provides fiber-like speeds of up to 300 Mbps. Moreover, the hybrid fiber/copper distribution point unit can be powered back from the user's home without the need for a power source. In addition, the low-density nature of DPU ports makes FTTdp much simpler and easier to deploy and manage than traditional DSL amplifiers (DSLAMs) and multi-user allocation units (MDUs).
