Imagination Introduces New PowerVR High Efficiency Video Encoding IP Series

March 9, 2015 – ImaginaTIon Technologies announces the launch of the new PowerVR High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) IP family, designed to provide the highest quality H.265 encoding and optimized silicon area and bandwidth usage.

The multi-standard encoder also provides a high-quality H.264 encoder that is compatible with various AVC (Advanced Video Codec) decoders currently on the market.

The PowerVR Series5 video encoder is ideal for flexible coding applications, offering multiple resolution and bit rate support at the highest quality and meeting market demands from 720p @ 30fps to 4K @ 60fps and higher. The first three IP cores in the new series include encoders optimized for high-efficiency mass markets, high-performance mainstream mobile markets, and ultra-high definition (UHD) content creation.

The HEVC/H.265 video compression technology is designed to provide video quality similar to the current AVC/H.264 encoding standard, but requires only about half the bit rate - this is the case for today's HD and UHD video over limited bandwidth connections. Content is crucial.

In terms of quality, the new Series5 encoder offers all the important advantages of HEVC, but the bit rate required is lower compared to H264. In addition, this architecture features advanced search algorithms, including a complete tool set implementation and optimized code rate control algorithms, enabling PowerVR solutions to achieve the same quality at 30% bit rate than other similar products. The new encoder supports 1080p @ 240fps high frame rate encoding for faster real-time transcoding, slow motion recording and multi-stream encoding.
