What is the ambient temperature?

We design the thermal design of an automotive electronics product. The purpose of the design is to ensure that each device does not cause functional failure during the heating process or that the entire system is not available. System unavailability involves many aspects, including power consumption, environmental factors, system design, and so on. So we need to define the ambient temperature. The figure below is a definition of the temperature at each point in the system, respectively:

1. System temperature, the temperature at this point is not affected by the temperature rise of the system, equivalent to thermal ground;

2. The air temperature inside the system is less affected by temperature rise because it is far away from the device;

3. The temperature of the air flowing through the surface of the device;

4. The temperature of the system housing must be considered during the design process. The temperature at this point must not exceed a certain maximum temperature value;

5. The temperature at the inlet and outlet of the system;

6. If the system is tested on a gantry or in a thermostat, this is the temperature in the test chamber;

7. When doing high temperature test, this point is the temperature inside the incubator;

8. Preheat the temperature in the incubator.

Among the 8 temperature points, the system design engineer needs to consider 2, 4 or 5, because these points are measurable; the test engineers will care about 6, 7 or 8 points, they need temperature control; and the device Vendors are concerned with temperatures of 1 and 3 because the temperatures at these two points are required for device modeling and they do not consider the temperature of the entire system.

The above is the definition of ambient temperature, which is different for different users.

So, when our partners tell us that the ambient temperature is 65 ° C, we need to figure out which point is the measured temperature, what the operating conditions are, and how long the duration is.

In the actual design, we need to consider the temperature of the surface of the device, or the temperature of the board, which will be closer to reality, and the so-called ambient temperature can not be directly used as a design. If possible, when designing a new product, we need to test the actual operating temperature of a similar product and then calibrate it further, rather than using the simulated temperature as the design temperature of the product.
