According to reports from Gartner and IDC, the global number of Internet of Things (IoT) connections surpassed 10 billion in 2020, with cellular connections making up over 10% of that total. To meet the growing demand for long-range IoT connectivity, Low-Power Wide-Area Networks (LPWANs) have emerged as a key solution. Among these, Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) has gained significant attention due to its wide coverage, high capacity, low data rate, low cost, and low power consumption. This technology is particularly well-suited for global deployment and has become a major focus in the IoT industry.
**Development and Characteristics of NB-IoT**
**NB-IoT Standardization Process**
In September 2015, NB-IoT was officially included in the 3GPP protocol. By June 2016, 3GPP had completed the standardization of NB-IoT, marking the completion of core IoT protocols in Release 13. This milestone paved the way for widespread adoption and commercialization of the technology.
**Operator Promotion of NB-IoT**
While new technologies may not always be driven by operators, their rapid development often depends on operator support. Globally, operators have recognized the potential of IoT and are actively expanding their NB-IoT networks. For example, South Korea’s KT plans to invest 150 billion won in building a new NB-IoT network, while Vodafone has established an NB-IoT open lab to explore new applications and solutions. In China, the three major operators—China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom—have all finalized their NB-IoT deployment schedules, aiming for nationwide commercialization in 2017 and beyond.
**Key Features of NB-IoT**
NB-IoT is characterized by four main technical features: **coverage**, **capacity**, **power efficiency**, and **cost-effectiveness**.
**Coverage**
NB-IoT improves coverage through enhanced power spectral density, transmission repetition, and uplink Inter-Cell Coordinated Multi-Point (CoMP). These techniques allow it to achieve deep indoor and rural coverage, even in challenging environments like underground parking lots or basements.
**Capacity**
Due to its low data rate and reduced signaling overhead, NB-IoT can handle a large number of devices simultaneously. It offers up to 50–100 times more capacity than 2G/3G/4G networks, making it ideal for massive IoT deployments.
**Power Consumption**
NB-IoT includes power-saving modes such as Power Saving Mode (PSM) and extended Discontinuous Reception (eDRX), allowing devices to operate for over 10 years on a single battery. This makes it highly suitable for remote and hard-to-reach IoT applications.
**Cost**
NB-IoT terminals are designed to be low-cost, with chips available for as little as $1. The use of narrowband design and simplified hardware reduces both production and deployment costs significantly.
**Frequency Deployment Plan and Recommendations**
NB-IoT supports three deployment scenarios: **standalone**, **guard band**, and **in-band**. Each mode has its own advantages and challenges, depending on existing network infrastructure and frequency availability.
Operators must carefully consider frequency allocation, especially when deploying NB-IoT in legacy 2G/3G bands. While lower frequencies offer better coverage, they also require careful planning to avoid interference and ensure smooth coexistence with other systems.
**Network Deployment Recommendations**
Operators are advised to prioritize low-band frequency allocations, such as 800 MHz or 900 MHz, for optimal coverage and cost efficiency. Depending on the specific situation, options include deploying NB-IoT after LTE, or deploying it alongside LTE for maximum flexibility.
As NB-IoT continues to evolve and gain traction, it is expected to play a crucial role in enabling the next generation of smart cities, industrial automation, and connected devices worldwide.
