Apple Patent: Adaptive Vehicle Augmented Reality Display Using Stereo Images

Apple is working hard to develop driverless cars and augmented reality technology is an open secret. Tim Cook, Apple’s chief executive, has hinted this many times in the past that the world’s most valuable technology company will be committed to the development of these two major breakthroughs in technology.

A new patent file discovered by AppleInsider shows that Apple can combine these two technologies into one, or at least use AR to support the development of self-driving cars.

The patent, called "Adaptive Vehicle Augmented Reality Display Using Stereoscopic Images," will combine passengers' data and a pre-made three-dimensional map to provide passengers with in-depth information about their surroundings. The entire concept is briefly described in the patent abstract, namely, "the AR system uses a pre-generated 3D model to improve the rendering of 3D image content in the AR scene view." This nicely visualized system can be presented on patent drawings. This picture shows how the AR display tracks and provides information on things that are currently invisible, such as road paths behind some trees or buildings.
