OSRAM builds the world's most advanced LED factory in Malaysia
In order to meet the global demand for the LED market, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, a leader in LED technology, announced the construction of one of the world's most advanced LED chip factories in Penang, Malaysia. Rudiger Muller, CEO of OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, and KohTsuKoon, Minister of Penang, Malaysia, held a groundbreaking ceremony marking the construction of the 30,000-square-meter facility. It is expected to be launched in the spring of 2009.

The new plant in Malaysia will use advanced nitride technology to produce LED chips. In addition, the existing production capacity of LED assembly lines in Penang will increase by more than 50%. In the long run, this expansion will add more than 800 new jobs, with a total number of more than 3,000, making OSRAM one of the most employee-owned companies in the southern part of northern Malaysia.
The increased productivity of the new plant and the LED chip factory in Regensburg, Germany, will strengthen OSRAM's position as the world's second largest LED manufacturer to meet future LED needs.
OSRAM employs approximately 40,000 people worldwide, supplying products to customers in 150 countries and 49 production lines in 18 countries.
