Austrian Microelectronics announced the launch of a new line of media player ICs with innovative IP that complements the audio and video experience of multimedia players and home entertainment devices.

Austrian Microelectronics' AS3536 is an innovative multimedia player system based on a newly developed audio and video engine with a post processor as a coprocessor with a 400MHz ARM CPU. The IC also includes system-level power management, high-quality audio codecs, and battery charging. System-level power consumption includes power conversion losses, access to NAND flash, DRAM memory, and the playback of the audio input to the headset using the running application software. The AS3535 is a lower cost derivative that can play audio and video files up to WQVGA resolution with 60mW system power. 60mW is the level required by most music file video players today.

For portable devices, achieving minimum power consumption in standby mode is critical. The AS3536's fully static design and low leakage technology help to save relevant information with only 1.4mW, or refresh the display with 4mW with an on-chip 512KB buffer (screen backlight off).

The fully hard-wired audio engine performs decompression and playback of the most popular compressed audio formats, such as MP3, WMA, and AAC, with very low power consumption without CPU load. The audio post processor uses an asynchronous sample rate converter (ASRC) that is close to transparent sound quality. It is a multi-channel mixer with limited function and 10-band graphic equalizer. It supports 24-bit dynamic range 192KHz sampling rate for high-definition audio processing. . Three I2S outputs can independently control stereo speakers, subwoofers, headphones or line outputs, or as multi-channel audio outputs. The AS3536 audio subsystem also includes a stereo PDM digital microphone input that meets all audio requirements of the next-generation multimedia player.

The fully hardware-implemented video engine decompresses and plays H.264/AVC, MPEG4, H.263, WMV9/VC-1 and Sorenson Spark multi-standard video with a resolution that exceeds that of a DVD player (D1 video). The decompression speed of JPEG images is 16M pixels per second. In the WMV9 supported by the advanced main class, you can store the same quality DVD movie with less than 1/6 of the original file size. The video post-processor includes functions such as up and down video scaling, rotation, cropping, screen segmentation, picture-in-picture, alpha blending, etc. to enhance the GUI effect. The unique ability of Adobe Flash to play Sorenson Spark videos helps to play popular website content such as YouTube and Google Video at very low power.

AS3536 can directly connect to the latest generation of mobile and embedded flash memory with 4/8/16-bit hardware ECC, such as MLC NAND Flash, iNAND, LBA NAND, moviNAND, oneNAND and removable memory card formats such as SD2.0, MMC+ , CE-ATA, MS PRO and CF. The sophisticated software suite supported by the third generation of the multimedia player market complements AS3536. The SDK has been certified for downloadable content under the Windows Vista rigorous testing standard.

The AS3536 is available now in a 10x10mm CTBGA 244 solder ball package with a solder ball pitch of 0.5mm. The lower cost derivative AS3535 supports video up to WQVGA resolution and 266MHz CPU clock frequency. Both device evaluation boards and reference kits are available.
