Huawei officially unveiled its flagship Mate10 series in Munich, Germany. One of the standout features of this new line is the integration of Huawei's first dedicated AI chip, the Kirin 970. This marks a significant step forward in bringing smartphones into the era of artificial intelligence, setting a new standard for smart devices.

According to recent data from Counterpoint Research, a leading global market research firm, it's predicted that by 2020, one-third of smartphones will come equipped with AI capabilities or neural processing units—approximately 500 million devices. Mid-to-high-end models released in late 2018 are expected to lead this transformation into the AI era.
Major smartphone manufacturers are already making moves in this direction. Apple plans to incorporate AI processors across its product lines, accelerating the shift toward AI-powered chips. Huawei has already introduced the Kirin 970 in the Mate10, featuring a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) that enhances performance for AI tasks. Qualcomm is also set to support AI on mid-to-high-end chips in the near future.
Analysts believe that with advanced AI capabilities embedded in SoCs, smartphones will be able to handle complex tasks such as natural language processing, real-time translation, and intelligent object recognition for better photography. These features are just the beginning. As machine learning advances, phones will become more adept at understanding user behavior, offering a more personalized and intuitive experience.
In terms of security, AI will play a crucial role. It can detect malware in real time, analyze user behavior, identify suspicious activity, and even spot phishing attempts in emails and apps. This makes smartphones safer than ever before.
The Mate10, which was recently launched, features the Kirin 970 chip—the world’s first chip with an integrated NPU. Compared to traditional CPUs and GPUs, the NPU offers superior performance for AI-related tasks like image recognition. The Kirin 970 delivers about 25 times the performance and 50 times the energy efficiency of four Cortex-A73 cores, ensuring a smooth and long-lasting user experience.
During a live demo, the Mate10 completed 100 image recognition tasks in just 5 seconds, while a competitor took 100 seconds. According to Huawei’s presentation, the Mate10 is 20 times faster than its rivals. With the same NPU, the device captured 1,000 photos using only 0.19% of the battery.
The Mate10 uses AI to continuously learn how to take better photos. It has learned over 100 million photo scenarios and can now recognize 13 different shooting environments, such as fog, snow, food, and flowers. Based on these, it automatically adjusts camera settings to capture high-quality images.
Additionally, the Mate10 leverages the NPU to speed up real-time text and image translation, making face-to-face conversations easier and more seamless. This level of AI integration shows how smartphones are evolving into truly intelligent devices, enhancing both functionality and user experience.
