IIHS announced that SUV headlight lighting test results were 60% unqualified

Recently, the American Highway Safety Association (IIHS) announced a test result for the illumination of 21 small SUV headlights. Surprisingly, none of the 21 models received an "excellent" rating. The four models barely reached an "acceptable" rating, with a total of 12 models rated as "poor", accounting for about 60%. In addition, it is worth noting that among all the tested models, the Honda HR-V (the Honda Binzhi in the US market) has the worst headlight illumination.

Specifically, the 21 models tested, according to the list data provided by IIHS, 4 models were rated as "acceptble" or "acceptable" SUV for 2017 version of Ford Maverick, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX- 3; 5 models were rated as "marginal" that is "just passed" models are BMW X1, Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander, Toyota RAV4, Volkswagen Tiguan; and 12 models were rated "poor" or "poor" models For Audi Q3, Buick Angola, Chevrolet Cool, Fiat 500X, Honda HR-V, JEEP Freeman, JEEP Freelance, JEEP Wrangler, 2017 Kia Sport Run, Mitsubishi Jinxuan ASX, Nissan Qijun, Subaru Forester.

The IIHS engineers placed the vehicle under test into five different situations at night, namely straight-line driving, left sharp turn, right sharp turn, normal left turn and normal right turn. In these five scenarios, engineers used nighttime professional measuring instruments to measure the proximity of the headlights of the 21 models tested. At the same time, the engineer also measured the degree of “interference” of the headlight beam to the driver on the opposite side. If the headlight illumination of the vehicle under test is too “glare” for other drivers, then the model’s The final score will not be higher than the "pass line". In addition, the only thing that can add points to this test is the headlight high beam assist technology, which means that the vehicle automatically adjusts the use of the far and near light according to the actual driving situation, which can greatly reduce the utilization rate of the high beam.

According to the above test conditions, the best performance of the 21 models tested is a new model: Mazda CX-3, this test is the top of the Grand Touring model. This model is equipped with curved adaptive LED lights and high beam assist system. In addition, the CX-3's low beam has a very good performance, both in normal right turn, straight, and left sharp turn. However, the CX-3 is not "perfect", the CX-3 provides insufficient illumination when cornering normally.

The remaining three SUVs that have achieved "acceptable" evaluation are Ford Maverick, Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson. However, all three models are not equipped with a headlamp curve adaptive control system, and only the Ford Maverick is equipped with high beam assist technology.

It is worth noting that the 2016 Honda HR-V (Honda Binzhi in the US market) "unfortunately" became the worst performing model in this test. Because of the five scenarios tested at night, the Honda HR-V's far and near light did not provide enough illumination.

The IIHS reminded consumers that the best performing models in the car were selected during the test, and consumers need to confirm whether they have purchased the corresponding model. For example, Hyundai Tucson is only an "acceptable" evaluation of the high-profile models, and the headlamp lighting tests of the remaining low-profile models are not qualified. However, even the high-speed Tucson still performed poorly after being equipped with the headlight curve adaptive system. This is because the model caused serious "glare" to other drivers.

Among the models tested, 17 models caused more serious “glare”, including almost all types of headlights – halogen, xenon, and LED. Therefore, the IIHS concluded that whether or not it caused serious "glare" was not related to the material of the headlights. Three of the 17 models are completely due to the “glare” of the headlights causing the “drop” pass.

“Automotive manufacturers have not paid equal attention to the basic lighting of the “lighting”,” said Matthew Brumbelow, senior research engineer at IIHS. “But we are optimistic that there will be a wake up after the car manufacturer’s wake up. The corresponding adjustment measures."

According to the IIHS, for the moment, the headlights of different vehicles behave differently, and the government standards are based only on theoretical tests. Therefore, the vehicle performance may be quite different from the theoretical value in the actual driving situation. According to statistics, almost half of traffic deaths are caused by poor lighting conditions, so the results of this test should be taken seriously.

It is understood that the American Highway Safety Association (IIHS) is the world's most "rigorous" collision testing organization, not only in 2012, but also created the "front 25% small area overlap collision test", which once became the "nightmare" of many test models. Almost every year, IIHS will add new test items based on actual conditions. According to IIHS, the lighting performance of the headlights will be an important prerequisite when the “highest” award, “TOPSAFETYPICK+”, is selected in 2017.
